If you would like to adopt a pet from the Brockton Blue Dog Shelter it very important to read all of the adoption information below. Any pet that you see listed through our PetFinder link below is currently available for adoption.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO READ THIS WHOLE PAGE IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ADOPT A DOG FROM THE BLUE DOG SHELTER!
Thank you for your interest in adopting from the Blue Dog Shelter! We want to make this process easy for you and we want our adoptions to be successful, so please take a moment to review these key points.
Shelter hours are Monday through Friday 10 AM – 4 PM, Saturday 8 AM – 2 PM, closed on Sunday except for pre-scheduled adoptions. We are located in the J.M. Pet Resort at 1014 Pearl St. in Brockton, MA.
You can see information about each pet by clicking on the pet’s name on our List of Adoptable Pets. A separate Petfinder page will open up with more pictures and a paragraph about the pet. The availability of each pet may be different so please read the information carefully. If no date or time is listed at the top of the paragraph, that pet is at the shelter and you may visit during any shelter hours. No appointment needed unless indicated in the write-up.
When new puppies are expected, their information is on the website 7-10 days before their actual arrival. The puppies are generally available for adoption starting at 8 AM on the Saturday listed on their Petfinder page but this can change for a number of reasons even on the last day, so please understand that we cannot make guarantees ahead of time. Since new puppies are very popular, there is often a high demand and our adoptions are on a first come, first served basis to the best - suited family. Sign-in for adoptions starts at 7:30 AM so that we can start promptly at 8 AM. Please note this change from our previous sign-in time. Potential adopters who have been pre-screened and pre-approved will have priority for meeting dogs.
Please complete an adoption application ahead of time. Submitting this on-line is the most efficient way and you will receive a detailed reply from an adoption counselor. Paper applications are available at the shelter if you do not have internet access. An adoption counselor will then contact you to go over the adoption process and answer any questions. We will then start checking your references so that everything is set when you come to meet the dog or puppy.
Once we have approved you for a dog or puppy, if you wish, we can take a $100 deposit to hold a puppy for you. This deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE so please be sure the information on your application is accurate and that this is the pet that you want. If some family members come later and do not agree with the adoption, or if a meeting with your current dog does not go well, you will lose your deposit because the puppy will have lost out on other chances for adoption. Our staff has years of experience and we will work with you to find the best pet for your individual situation even though that may not be the pet you came to see.
One requirement that you must understand is that our shelter requires all adopters to bring their new dog or puppy to an approved, motivational training program within three months of the adoption. We strongly believe that this helps to establish the pet’s place in the family, builds a strong commitment to the dog, and helps to prevent many of the problems that lead to dogs being returned to shelters. Our shelter was founded on this principle, and even if you are an experienced dog owner, you will need to take this training.
Again, we thank you for your interest in a shelter pet and we hope to make your new dog a Blue Dog!
